Cumilla ‘shootout’ leaves suspected robber dead

An alleged robber was killed in a shootout with police in Darikandi area in Cumilla’s Titas upazila in the early hours of Friday.

The dead man was identified as Md Al-Amin, son of Mainuddin of Noyagaon village in the upazila.

Police said they arrested Al-Amin on Thursday afternoon along with Tk 1.5 million looted money after a case was filed alleging that a gang of robbers, including Al-Amin, looted Tk 5.8 million from five bKash agents intercepting their rickshaws in the area in the morning.

After gleaning information from him, a team of Titas thana police and DB police conducted a drive at the place with Al-Amin at around 3:45am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Al-Amin’s associates tried to snatch him from police by firing directly on the lawmen, forcing them to fire back.

Investigation officer of the case and Superintendent of DB police Shahidul Islam said, Al-Amin sustained bullet injuries during the skirmish and doctors declared him dead when he was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital, as per a UNB report.

Police recovered a light gun and a revolver from the spot, a case was also filed in this connection.
