‘Drug pedlar’ dies in Mymensingh ‘shootout’

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Detective Branch (DB) of police in Shambuganj area of Sadar upazila of Mymensingh early Tuesday.

The deceased Bacchu alias Bhebel Bacchuwas was accused in 15 drug-related cases, said Ashiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of district DB police.

Being informed that a gang of drug traders gathered in the area around 2:45 am for sharing drug money, a team of detective conducted the drive there, said the OC.

Sensing the presence of police, the drug traders hurled brick chips on them and later opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering the gunfight.

The gunfight left Bacchu bullet injured. Later, he was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered 200 Yaba tablets and four bullet shells from the spot, the OC added.

Two policemen were also injured during the 'gunfight', added the OC said, reports UNB.

With the latest, at least 122 people were killed in 'shootouts' with members of law enforcement agencies while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since 15 May.
