After nearly three decades, the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union is sitting for its first meeting.

Vice President Nurul Haq Nur and other newly-elected leaders attended the event at the DUCSU building on Saturday morning.

The meeting, presided by Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman, began at 11:30 am.

The VC traditionally fills the president’s post at the DUCSU, while the others are elected from the student body.

Nur arrived at 11:30 am. He was accompanied by Social Service Secretary Akhtar Hossain.

The two DUCSU leaders were elected from the quota reformers panel in the DUCSU polls. The remaining members are from the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

BCL leaders General Secretary Golam Rabbani and Assistant General Secretary Saddam Hossain also attended the meeting, reports ndmews24.com.

The DUCSU leaders sat for photos before the meeting.

The meeting is to discuss the DUCSU’s activities during its term of one year.

According to the university’s customs, the student representatives and university authorities will organise an inauguration programme at a later date.

The DUCSU polls were held on Mar 11 after nearly three decades alongside 18 hall council elections. They ended in boycotts from most of the panels after allegations of fraud and irregularities.

Quota reformers, the leftist alliance, the Chhatra Dal and two panels of independent candidates have demanded fresh polls.

Though the Bangladesh Chhatra League won 23 of 25 DUCSU posts, two of them were won by candidates from the quota reformers panel.

Though Nur has taken charge as vice president, he has expressed his support of a new election.

“We took the decision after discussions with the general students of Dhaka University. Like them, we think that we should take charge and continue the movement. And that’s what I will do,” he said.
