NAOGAON, Feb 26: Fish cultivation in cages is gaining ground in Mohadevpur upazila of the district for high production.
Hundreds of youths in the area are self-reliant farming varieties of fishes under the method.
They took short-term training on pisciculture from the local fisheries office.
Sources said the method is generally applied in river and canal or an open waterbody where there as a free flow of water.
Some people have started applying the method in large ponds.
Before starting the farm in the open water body, farmers have to take permission from the concerned authority.
Kazi Nazmul of the upazila said he cultivates varieties of fish in floating cages in a river.
The farmer said the method is profitable and cost saving.
Monosex fishes are being cultivated under the method across the area as it is easy and requires little investment.
Fisheries office sources said many people show their interest in farming fish under the method.
Under the process, farmers make the cages with net, bamboo, JI pipe and large drums.
Each cage contains 22 feet length and 12 feet width. Around Tk 12,000 to Tk 14,000 is required to set up a single cage in the water body.
Farmers can cultivate 900 to 1,000 fish in a cage, said the district Fisheries Department.
