An alleged drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Muktarpur village in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila in the early hours of Friday.

The dead man was identified as Abdul Barek, 40, son of Abdul Goni of Karpashdanga village in the upazila.

Sukumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Police Station, said police arrested Barek from the village at around 2:00am.

While heading towards the police station after arrest, Barek’s associates opened fire on the police, forcing them to retaliate in self-defence, the OC said.

At one stage, Barek was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries. When taken to Sadar Hospital, doctors declared him dead, UNB reports quoting the OC.

Four policemen were injured in the incident.

The law enforcers recovered one pipe-gun, two bullets, two sharp weapons and phensedyl syrups, kept in a sack from the spot.

Barek was wanted in 15 criminal cases, according to the police.
