Gunfights in Kushtia, Cox’s Bazar leave two ‘robbers’ dead

Two suspected robbers were killed in separate 'gunfights' with law enforcers in Cox's Bazar and Kushtia districts early Monday.

In Cox's Bazar, Abul HasanManik, 30, a suspected pirate was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Sonadia Island in Maheshkhali upazila early Monday.

Tipped off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in the area, said Prabhas Chandra Das, officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station. Sensing presence of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on them forcing them to fire back in self-defense, reports UNB.

At one stage, the RAB members recovered the bullet-hit body of Manik, son of Ledu Mia of Kutubdia upazila and sent it to local hospital morgue for autopsy.

They also recovered two guns, eight cartridges and six shells of bullets from the spot.

In Kushtia, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between two groups of robbers at Hawakhali field in Bheramaraupazila early Monday.

The deceased could not be identified yet.

On information that there was a gunfight between two groups of 'robbers', a team of police conducted the drive around 1:30am, said KhandakerShamimuddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Bheramara Police Station.

Sensing presence of the police, the robbers fled the scene. Later, police found the 'robber' hit with bullets.

The injured was then taken to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered a pistol, three round bullets and two magazines from the spot.
