The government has taken an initiative to increase the navigability of Buriganga River and to protect the river from pollution.

Water Resource Minister Anwar Hossain Monju came up with the statement while replying to a query placed by a lawmaker at the parliament on Sunday, reports BSS.

"The Bangladesh Water Development Board is implementing a project titled “Buriganga River recovery (New Dalweshwari-Pungli,-Bongshai-Turag- Buriganga river system) project” with cost of Taka 11.255 billion," the minister said.

Under the project, the water development board will increase 141 cusec water flow of the Buriganga River by bringing 245 cusec water flow from the River Jamuna during the dry season, the minister mentioned.

Consequently, the water flow and navigability of the Buriganga River will increase during the dry season and the intensity of pollution will also be decreased, he added.

Currently, the project is now going on and implementation of the project will be ended by June 2020, the minister noted.
