Layer poultry farms flourish in Magura

MAGURA, Feb 28: Layer poultry farm owners in the district are making good profit due to high market prices of eggs.

Some farm owners said a good number of farms were shut down due to abnormal fall in egg prices. But the situation started improving from the middle of last year.

An egg is being sold at Tk 8.0 which was Tk 5.0 in 2017, they added.

The district livestock office sources said there are some 290 layer farms in the district. Egg production is around 0.85 million pieces per day in the district against some 0.8 million pieces of demand.

Layer farm owner Zillur Rahman of Sadar upazila said he has some 5,000 birds at his farm. He gets 3,500 eggs per day.

"I sell eggs at Tk 7.5 per piece in the wholesale market", the farmer said, adding, "I make Tk 5,200 to Tk 5,300 profit per day."

Retailer Belal Joarder in Puratan Bazar area said egg prices have incased in the last one year.

When contacted Dr Abdullahel Kafi, assistant professor at Faridpur Medical College, said egg is a protein-enriched food.

"We suggest people to take at least one egg a day", the physician said.

The district livestock officer Kanai Lal Sarnaker said Magura is a surplus egg producing district.

Layer poultry farms are flourishing in the area, the official further said.
