Malibagh bomb was powerful, says DMP chief

The bomb that exploded in Dhaka's Malibagh on Sunday night was much more powerful than usual crude bombs, the city police chief has said.

Asaduzzaman Mia, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said this on Monday while visiting a 50-year-old rickshaw puller injured in the incident at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Apart from the rickshaw puller, Assistant Sub-Inspector Rasheda Akhter Babli, 28, was injured during the blast that occurred around 8:50pm on Sunday, local media reports say.

They were first admitted to the Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital and then transferred to the DMCH. After the incident, all police personnel in the capital were alerted from the control room.

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, Detective Branch of Police and Criminal Investigation Department visited the spot after the incident.

According to a statement of the militant activity watchdog Site Intelligence Group, the Middle East-based militant outfit Islamic State claimed the attack.
