A suspect in several cases has been killed in an alleged shootout with DB police as part of an anti-drug raid in Mymensingh.

The shootout took place behind SK Hospital in the city’s Kalibari neighbourhood at around 1:45 am on Sunday, said Shah Kamak Akanda, chief of Mymensingh DB police.

The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Sharif, a resident of Doulot Munshi Bylane area in Kestopur.

He was named on the police top drug-trafficker’s list, OC Akanda said.

“Sharif was at large after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Apart from drug trade, he was involved with robbery. He was named in seven criminal cases on murder and drug-related charges.”

Two teams of DB police conducted an anti-drug operation in Kalibari area late on Sunday. When a team arrived in the area, the drug traffickers began to hurl bricks and stones at them. The DB personnel returned fire in self-defence, OC Akanda said.

“At one point, the drug traffickers fled and Sharif was found wounded on the spot. He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.”

Two constables of DB police were also injured in the incident and received first aid, bdnews24 reported.

Police have recovered 100 yaba pills, 5 kilograms of marijuana and 12 bullet shells from the scene, he said.
