Orange farming on rooftop gaining momentum

NAOGAON, Jan 11: Orange cultivation on a rooftop orchard is gaining momentum across the district with the help of local agriculture offices.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), some people have started growing the juicy fruit and getting a satisfactory yield. A good number of people in the area have shown more interest to grow the fruit on rooftop orchard on commercial basis.

"I have been started cultivating the fruit on the roof of my house for two years. This year I have got a good yield from the plants," said grower Abdul Kuddus, lecturer of the Biology Department of Chandas Degree Collage under Mohadebpur upazila.

In a recent visit this correspondent found each Hali (four pieces) of locally-produced orange is being sold from Tk 60 to Tk 80 while imported ones at Tk 55 to Tk 60 in the market.

Upazila agriculture officer AKM Mofidul Islam said the locally-produced orange is free from all sort of toxic.

Orange cultivators of the district urged the authority concerned to provide all necessary support to achieve a good yield.

Deputy director of DAE Satya Broto Shaha said this district has a high prospect in producing the citrus fruit due to the favourable weather condition of the area.
