Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Friday that those who will contest the upcoming upazila elections defying party directives were traitors and wayward.

"One-person rule has been established in the country after the dummy election with the help of a neighbouring country on January 7, 2024. People of the country are now in serious trouble. Voting rights of the freedom-loving and democratic-minded people are now at stake," he said at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office in the afternoon.

"The election in Bangladesh has already become a funny joke to the people of the world. Not only the national elections but also the local government body polls have already turned into election of 'ours and uncles (mamus)," he mentioned.

He called upon the people to be united and boycott the so- called upcoming upazila polls.

He said the government that looted public votes could never hold a free and fair election in the country.

Meanwhile, BNP chairperson's adviser Zainul Abdin Farroque called upon on Friday the government 'to resign before getting defeated to the people'.

"Quit power now before you get defeated to the people. Take a silent exit after restoring the caretaker government system," he said at a rally organised by Swadhinata Adhikar Andolon in front of the National Press Club in the city demanding immediate release of party leaders, including chairperson Khaleda Zia, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Habib-in-Nabi Khan Sohel and Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.

He categorically said that BNP never believes in hatching conspiracy to get back power.

He said that his party doesn't hatch conspiracy rather the ruling AL is involved in conspiracy as it had held national elections in 2014 without BNP, arranged polls in 2018 during night and staged dummy elections in 2014.

Kazi Moniruzzaman Monir of Swadhinata Adhikar Andolon pressed over the event also attended by adviser to BNP chairperson Habibur Rahman Habib, child affairs secretary of BNP Abul Kalam Azad Siddique and executive member of the party Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah.
