Protesters have blocked the streets near Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka for the second day on Wednesday after the death of a student in a road accident.

A bus operated by Suprobhat Paribahan ran over and killed Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, 20, a first-year student of international relations department at the Bangladesh University of Professionals, or BUP, on a zebra crossing in the area on Tuesday.

The protests resumed around 9.30am on Wednesday on the road leading into the Bashundhara residential area, near the shopping mall, reports bdnews24.

Students of American International University Bangladesh (AIUB), North South University (NSU), and Siddheshwari College joined BUP students in demanding safer roads in the wake of Abrar’s death.

The police created diversions at the Kalachandpur Bus Stand and Kuril as traffic at Pragati Sarani came to a standstill due to the protests.

A large number of police personnel lined up on both sides of the roads near the place of the protest in Nadda and Kalachandpur Bus Stand.

Abrar’s death sparked severe streets protests on Tuesday. Students of private universities demonstrated in front of Bashundhara Residential Area's main gate to force the authorities accept their demands, including maximum punishment of the killer driver.

Other demands include checking papers of drivers on regular basis, making transport sector free from political influence, construction of foot overbridges, installing speed-breakers at risky points and stopping unfit vehicles from plying, according to a UNB report.

They shouted slogans demanding justice for Abrar, son of Brig Gen (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury.

The agitating students also called for boycotting classes at all the educational institutions across the country today (Wednesday) and urged the students to take position in front of their respective institutions to express solidarity with the protesters' demands.
