A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bhadalia Sastipur in Kushtia sadar upazila early Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Rafique Uddin, 35, son of Daud Ali of Baradi, a suburb area of the district town.

Tipped off, a joint team of DB police and Kushtia Model Police went to the spot early in the morning, where two gangs of 'drug traders' were exchanging bullets among them, said Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire to police, forcing them to fire back in 'self-defence'.

After a brief shootout, the criminals managed to flee the scene.

Later, police found Rafique with bullet-hit injuries and took him to General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

He was wanted in several cases filed under Narcotics Act, says a news agency report.

Four policemen were also injured during the gunfight.

One pistol, two bullets, two magazines, and 50 bottles of phensedyl were seized from the spot.
