Two forest robbers and a suspected drug dealer were killed in separate gunfights in Khulna and Meherpur districts on Tuesday.

In Khulna, the ringleader of a 'robber gang' and another member were killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the Sundarbans under Dacope upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Khaleque, 35, lynchpin of 'Khaleque Bahini, and its member Belal, 39, reports UNB.

Shafiqul Islam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Dakope Police Station, said a team of RAB-8 conducted a drive in Jangra Khal area of the forest under Chandpai range around 5:00am.

Sensing law enforcers' presence, robbers opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight, he said.

After the gunfight, bullet-hit Khaleque and Belal were found lying dead, the OC said, adding that 10 firearms and huge ammunition were recovered from the spot.

In Meherpur, a drug dealer was killed in a gunfight between two groups of drug pushers in Sadar upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Hamidul Islam, 30, son of Aroj Ali of Govipur village in the upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Shah Dara Khan said on information that two groups of drug traders were trading gunshots a team of police went to Govipur in the early hours.

They found bullet-hit Hamidul lying dead on the spot, he said, adding that the gunfight might have taken place over the share of drug money, reports UNB.

Police also recovered a shooter gun, two bullets and 12 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from the spot, the OC claimed.

He also said Hamidul was wanted in a dozen cases filed with his police station.
