Two held with firearms in Khagrachari

Members of security forces arrested two suspected members of an armed tribal group along with three firearms and 10 round bullets from Khagrachari town on Wednesday afternoon.

The arrestees are Ronjoy Chakma, 35, and Dononjoy Chakma, 35.

There was a specific intelligence report that a tribal armed group has been engaged in illegal firearms trading secretly at 'Four Star Hotel' in Shaplachattar area, said an intelligence official in Dhaka preferring anonymity, reports UNB.

Based on the information, a joint team comprising members of Bangladesh Army and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) conducted a combined drive there around 2:30 pm and arrested the duo along with two foreign-made pistols, a LG and 10 bullets, he said.

It is apprehended that regional tribal armed groups have been involved in collecting illegal firearms as part of their plan to conduct widespread sabotage activities centering the upcoming Upazila Parshad elections, he added.
