Uninterrupted electricity matter of time: Nasrul Hamid

'460 upazilas to get 100pc electricity by 2018'

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said uninterrupted electricity supply is now a matter of time.

"460 upazilas will get 100 per cent by December 2018 and uninterrupted electricity is a matter of time" he said.

The junior minister made the remarks at power purchase agreement signing ceremony at Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday.

Nasrul Hamid said the government has already brought 36 upazilas under 100 per cent electricity coverage, while 56 upazilas are under pipeline.

"The government has created opportunities for local companies to contribute more to meet the country's electricity and energy demand," Nasrul said.

He said the capacity of public sector has been increased to deal with any situation.

The state minister said in the last few years, on an average 900MW-1,000MW of electricity was added to the national grid and in the coming year it will reach to 3,000MW.

During the ceremony, Bangladesh Power Development Board and Summit Gazipur-2 Power Limited signed the contract for establishing a 300-MW power plant at Gazipur.

BPDB secretary Mina Masud Uzzaman and Summit Gazipur-2 Power Limited Director General M Muzammel Hossain signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.

According to the contract, the BPDB will purchase electricity from Summit at a cost of 10.60 cents per unit for 15 years. Power will be available from the plant within 9 months, reports UNB.

Among others, BPDB Chairman Khaled Mahmood, Chairman of Summit Group Mohammad Aziz Khan also spoke on the occasion.
