11,000 RMG workers lose jobs after wage board implementation movement

At least 11,000 workers of 99 garment factories have been fired from jobs for the alleged involvement in the labour unrest during the recent movement demanding implementation of the wage board and removal of discrimination in its wage structure.

The IndustriAll Bangladesh Council (IBC) came up with the information at a press conference in Dhaka city’s National Press Club on Tuesday.

Besides, some 3,500 workers have been sued in 34 cases relating to the unrest in Savar, Ashulia and Gazipur, and over a hundred others are now in jail.

Furthermore, workers are facing harassments by police and owners every day, the industry body alleged.

This time, the number of workers sacked has reached an all time high in the country, it added, expressing fears of further protests in the event of the harassments going on.

The IBC called for forming a tripartite body with representatives from government, owners and workers to look into these incidents and take necessary steps to bring a peaceful end to the crisis.
