Almost all garment factories have paid wages for the month of May and festival allowances for Eid-ul-Fitr, BGMEA has claimed.

"We have been closely monitoring some 1,200 garment factories suggested risky to labour unrest over wage payment by different agencies," Md Siddiqur Rahman president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said.

He was speaking at a press conference on labour situation in the country’s readymade garment industry ahead of Eid at BGMEA headquarters in the capital on Thursday.

Out of them, the trade body found 35 ‘risky’ and wages and festival allowances in those units have been paid, he explained.

"Not a single factory has left where payment of wages and allowance issues were not solved," he added.

The BGMEA chief said that they noticed problems in some factories over unlawful demands, including advance partial payment for the month of June and leave ahead of Eid.

There is no legal obligation to advance payment and holidays, he explained.

Moreover, problems were found in compliant factories where registered trade unions are present and payment of wages and other allowance were paid, he observed.

90 per cent factories were closed by Wednesday and the rest announced Eid holidays from Thursday, the BGMEA chief said.

He called on drivers to drive carefully to avert accident and safe return of passengers.

Mr Rahman also requested for strong government’s vigilance so that transports are not overloaded with passengers.
