Europe can't rely on US: Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Europe cannot rely on the United States to impose order on the world.

Angela Merkel made the remarks at the annual summer news conference in Berlin of Germany on Friday.

“We can’t rely on the superpower of the United States,” Merkel said adding that she was right to say same words a year ago, reports Reuters.

Last week, US President Donald Trump accused Berlin of being a “captive” of Russia due to its energy reliance.

Referring to the statement, Angela Merkel said, Germany’s relationship with the United States is crucial.

“However, the transatlantic working relationship, including with the US president, is crucial for us and I will carry on cultivating it,” she added.

Asked about her working relationship with Trump, Merkel told the news conference: “One can say that the values, or our usual framework, are under strong pressure at the moment.”
