Many rights groups on Friday formed a human chain in the city and placed a 17-point demand for safe road and public transport.

Titled ‘Stop the unabated death on roads: ensure safe public transport’ a total of 26 rights groups participated at the human chain demanding the public transport system of the country to be safe for commuters.

Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Vice President Syed Abul Maksud led the programme while Bangladesh College-University Teachers Association president Prof Nur Muhammad Talukdar, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity secretary General Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury spoke at the programme, among others.

BAPA joint secretary Mihir Biswas presided over the human chain while BAPA general secretary read out written speech placing their 17-point demand.

Syed Abul Maksud alleged that Bangladesh transport management is the worst in the world. The most underdeveloped countries in the globe have better transport system than Bangladesh does.

“If there is minimum accountability in the country’s administration, police and transport authorities, then we could not experience the incumbent worst scenario in the transport system and deaths on roads”, he alleged.

He urged the government to ensure ordinary commuters’ safety rather not giving priority to handful transport owners.

The 17-point demand includes:

  • Amendment of the motor vehicle ordinance-1983
  • Ensuring safe walkway and environment for pedestrians and manual vehicles
  • Management of proper traffic
  • Repairing of roads
  • Bringing the vehicles drivers under punishment who possess fake license
  • Transport owners to be made accountable and punished
  • Launching the system of paying drivers on monthly basis instead of daily trips
  • Creating mass awareness
  • Establish speed control
  • Taking BRTA to more accountable and active
  • Modernising rail and water ways and reduce dependency on road transport
  • Establishing driver training academy
  • Bringing the public transport under company system in the city.
