Indian cooperation in focus for Rohingya repatriation

The road transport and bridges minister has sought cooperation of Indian government for the repatriation of Rohingya who crossed into Bangladesh fleeing the violence in their homeland.

Obaidul Quader, also the ruling Awami League general secretary, made the appeal at the closing ceremony of the three-day Bangladesh-India Media dialogue at Radisson Hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday.

BSS said State Minister for Information Tarana Halim and Deputy High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Dr Adarsh Swaika, among others, were present at the function with Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh Prof Abdul Mannan in the chair.

According to Mr Quader, "It is urgent to resolve the Rohinga crisis..... India extended their cooperation during the War of Liberation. I hope that India will provide their support to end the Rohinga problems."

He referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment regarding Teesta water sharing and urged the Indian government to take immediate steps for resolving the Teesta water sharing issue.
