Bangladesh’s search for a successor to Chandika Hathurusaingha has ended through the appointment of Steve Rhodes as head coach of the national cricket team.
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan made the announcement on the appointment of Rhodes for two years at a news conference in Dhaka on Thursday, reports bdnews24.com
The new coach will start working on June 20 before the upcoming series against the West Indies later this month, Nazmul said.
The BCB earlier said they had shortlisted the Englishman following recommendations by South African coach Gary Kirsten, who was hired to help the BCB find the perfect candidate for the job.
The BCB also called Rhodes for interview, where he made a presentation on his plan to coach the Tigers, just as Phil Simmons and former Bangladesh coach Richard Pybus did.
Rhodes had told the ESPNcricinfo that he was interested in “what I think is a really prestigious role”.
Rhodes, who played 11 Tests and nine ODIs, is known for his talent-spotting skills.
The BCB said they were interested in Rhodes for his experience, considering that the next World Cup is going to be played in England.
“We may get some advantages if we involve someone from the English condition with the team,” BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury had said.
