Some 44.3 per cent or 26.9 million employed people are own-account workers, according to the Labour Force Survey 2016-17 (LFS 2017).
They are basically self-employed with no employees in their informal sector enterprises. They engage in producing goods exclusively for the final use by their families.
Released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) last month, the LFS 2017 also showed that 39.1 per cent or 23.8 million employed people work in others’ organisations.
Moreover, some 7.0 million – 5.3 million females and 1.7 million males – or 11.5 per cent employed people are primarily contributing family workers, it found.
The study unearthed that only 4.4 per cent employed people are employers themselves.
The country, according to the BBS survey, accounted for 60.8 million employed people in the last fiscal year.
