Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Tuesday that his top priority is to deregulate institutional powers to improve efficiency and restore momentum in the economy.

“My first priority is deregulation,” the finance and planning minister told the Financial Express (FE) on Tuesday after being sworn in.

He said his next priority would be to ease the cost of doing business.

“The cost of doing business is higher in Bangladesh than in many other peer countries,” Mr. Khosru said.

He further stated that difficulties in doing business remain a major barrier, hampering investment, fuelling inflation and reducing overall economic efficiency.

Bangladesh was ranked 168th out of 190 economies in the World Bank’s Doing Business index until 2019.

The World Bank later suspended the flagship publication following controversies over data irregularities.
