Tax-revenue collection remained sluggish up to May, posting only 6.0-percent growth and raising serious doubts about meeting the revised target for the current fiscal year (FY 2024-25).

During the July-May period, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) achieved only 6.0 per cent growth, much lower than above 10 per cent averaged over the past five years.

Up to May, the NBR mobilised Tk 3.27 trillion in tax revenue, facing a shortfall of Tk 666 billion against the revised target for this period, according to figures released on Thursday.

To achieve the FY25 target, the revenue authority will have to collect Tk 4.63 trillion more by June 30, 2025.

Among its three wings, the VAT department recorded 8.78 per cent growth, collecting Tk 1.27 trillion, but still fell short of the target by Tk 180.35 billion.

The income tax wing collected Tk 1.07 trillion, marking 6.66 per cent growth, with a shortfall of Tk 322.28 billion.

The customs department registered only 1.71 per cent growth, with a shortfall of Tk 164.14 billion against its target of Tk 1.09 trillion.
