Professor Dr Abdul Bashir, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Professor Nisar Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, have both resigned from their positions.
Professor Bashir announced his resignation in his office on Monday, formally submitting a written resignation letter. Similarly, Professor Nisar Hossain sent his resignation letter directly to the Vice-Chancellor.
Earlier on Monday morning, students staged a protest in front of the Faculty of Arts, demanding Professor Bashir's resignation. Following his resignation, students gathered at the dean's office to recite the Qur’an and pray for him.
The students accused Professor Abdul Bashir of supporting the authoritarian government during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
In response to his resignation, Professor Bashir stated, “I was prepared to step down. I did not want to go against the students.”
In his resignation letter, Professor Nisar Hossain cited a four-point demand letter he received, which included calls for his resignation. The letter accused him of supporting genocide and dictatorship during the student movement. Professor Hossain expressed that, given the circumstances, he preferred to resign from his deanship rather than contest the complaints or demand an official review.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr Sitesh Chandra Bachar indicated that the resignations will take effect only after a new Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
