Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam on Saturday urged everyone to work from their respective positions to fulfill the aspirations of the historic July mass uprising.
He made the call while addressing a discussion titled “July Struggle, Dreams and Commitment in Memory” organized by Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall at the hall auditorium marking the second anniversary of the July mass uprising, UNB reports.
Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall Provost Professor Dr Aleya Begum chaired the programme.
On the occasion, various programmes were held at Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall on Friday (July 24), including an open letter writing competition to the martyrs, a painting competition titled “July of Rebellion and Revolution”, a quiz competition titled “Looking Back at July”, and a discussion, recollections, cultural programme and prize-giving ceremony.
DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammad Almojadeddie Alfezani attended the programme at the hall auditorium as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners of different competitions.
The event was chaired by Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall Provost Professor Dr Mahbuba Sultana. DU Proctor Md Israfiul Prang and Assistant Proctor Dr Robiul Islam attended as special guests.
Hall Students’ Union Vice-President Rafia Rehnuma Hridi, General Secretary Nishita Zaman Niha, Assistant General Secretary Tanzina Tammim Hafsa and Sharmin Akter Nimmy shared their memories of the July uprising.
A cultural programme was held after the discussion and prize distribution ceremony.
Earlier on July 17, students of the hall organized a candle-lighting programme and patriotic music performance to mark the occasion. On July 17, 2024, students of the hall had protested against the then government through candle lighting.
A discussion and memorial programme titled “Remembering the Bloody July” held at Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall at 7:00pm on Saturday. DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam attended the event as the chief guest, while the hall provost Professor Dr Mohammad Nazmul Hossain chaired the programme.
Meanwhile, Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall organized a wreath-laying ceremony at the July Resistance Courtyard in front of its main building on Saturday. A photo frame was also unveiled to preserve memories of the July resistance.
Later, a discussion, students’ recollections and a documentary screening on the July resistance were held at the hall auditorium. DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammad Almojadeddie Alfezani attended as the chief guest, while the hall provost Professor Dr Mohammad Aminul Islam Bhuiyan chaired the programme.
As part of the observance, the Faculty of Science will organize a seminar titled “July Mass Uprising 2024: Aspirations of Students and People and Future Bangladesh” at the faculty conference room at 12:30pm on Sunday.
DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Abdus Salam will chair the seminar, where Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam will attend as chief guest. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammad Almojadeddie Alfezani, National University Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Mohammad Lutfor Rahman and Chemistry Department Emeritus Professor Dr Tajmeri S A Islam will attend as special guests.
Physics Department Emeritus Professor Dr AFM Yusuf Haider will present the keynote paper at the seminar.
Shamsun Nahar Hall will also organize a series of programmes on Sunday, including a quiz competition on the mass uprising at 6:00pm, documentary screening at 7:00pm, memory-sharing session at 7:05pm, poetry recitation at 7:15pm, group dance performance at 7:25pm and prize distribution at 7:30pm.
