Dr Kazi Saleh Ahmed, the former vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) and a renowned professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science, died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhanmondi area of Dhaka.
He was 83 years old. Dr Ahmed is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, relatives, numerous colleagues, students, and well-wishers.
He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University from 1988 to 1993, leaving a lasting impact on the institution. The JU community is deeply saddened by the passing of this veteran educationalist.
The first Janaza prayer was held at the Takwa mosque near his Dhanmondi residence after Zohar prayers, according to his family. A second Janaza will take place after Asr prayers at the university's central playground.
Prof Kazi Saleh Ahmed’s daughter Prof Dr Meherun Ahmed has requested prayers for her father on behalf of the family.
In honour of Dr Ahmed, the Jahangirnagar University authorities have declared a one-day mourning period on Tuesday.
During the mourning day, a black flag is hoisted, and the university flag is kept at half-mast. Additionally, all university classes, except for exams, have been suspended.
Current Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Nurul Alam expressed deep grief and sorrow over Dr. Ahmed's death.
In a condolence message, he stated, "The passing of Professor Dr. Kazi Saleh Ahmed represents an irreplaceable loss for the country and the nation. His absence will be deeply felt in the fields of statistics and data science. The university authorities respectfully remember his contributions to education, research, and the development of the university's physical infrastructure."
Professor Dr. Md Nurul Alam also prayed for the repose of Dr. Ahmed's soul and extended his condolences to the bereaved family members.
