ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, Kushtia: A capacity development workshop on GPS-based geospatial technology in tourism planning and management was held on Monday at the initiative of the fifth batch students of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management of the Islamic University (IU).
Md. Khadijatul Kobra, lecturer, moderated the workshop, while Assistant Professor Md Shariful Islam, chairman of the department, chaired the event.
The Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, Professor Dr Muhammad Abdus Shahid Mia, was present as the chief guest.
Assistant Professor Md. Inzamul Haque of the Department of Environmental Science and Geography was present as the resource person. In addition, Associate Professor Md Masud Rana of the department and students of the 2021-22 academic year were present.
Wasifur Rahman, a fifth-batch student of the department, said, "This workshop significantly enhanced our understanding of GPS and geospatial technology. The knowledge and practical skills we gained will play a vital role in tourism planning and destination management in the future."
Assistant Professor Md. Inzamul Haque discussed at the workshop how to safely and effectively visit a tourist site using GPS technology.
"Using GPS technology, the exact location of tourist places and travel routes can be easily determined. As a result, the risk of getting lost in unfamiliar areas is reduced, and it is possible to ensure the safe movement of tourists. In addition, in emergency situations, one's location can be quickly sent to the rescue team. GPS technology is also very effective in tourism planning, route management, and collecting accurate information about tourist places," he said.
The workshop's course facilitator and lecturer of the Tourism Geography course, Mst. Khadijatul Kobra said, "Today's workshop focused on the practical use of GPS tracking in identifying and managing tourist destinations.
How to locate safe zones and restricted areas, identify suitable mountain climbing routes, and record information on tourist arrivals and departures students learned from it."
