The government has appointed Prof Dr Md Maksud Helali, a retired BUET mechanical engineering professor, as the new vice-chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).
The education ministry issued a notification on Thursday, confirming the appointment with the approval of the president and chancellor.
Dr Helali will serve a four-year term from the date of joining. He will receive the same salary and benefits he was entitled to before retiring from BUET and enjoy all facilities attached to the post. He must stay on campus full-time. The appointment can be cancelled at any time by the president if necessary.
The VC post had been vacant since Apr 26, when the government removed the previous VC and pro-VC following a clash over a demand to ban student politics that left over 100 injured on Feb 18.
Prof Hazrat Ali of KUET was appointed interim VC on May 1 but resigned on May 22 after facing opposition from teachers. A circular inviting applications for the VC post was published on 10 June.
KUET’s teachers and students had been demanding a permanent VC to end the deadlock and resume academic activities, which have remained suspended for over five months.
