The Rajshahi University (RU) Syndicate has approved a mega development project proposal worth around Tk 35 billion (3,500 crore) for improving the university's infrastructure and enhancing advanced research facilities.
The approval came at the Syndicate's 543rd meeting, held on Monday with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib in the chair. The information was confirmed in a press release, issued by Prof. Dr. Akhtar Hossain Mazumder, administrator of the Public Relations Office.
RU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Dr. Main Uddin said, "We have submitted a proposal that includes developing several new halls, academic buildings, and research centres."
"This is how large-scale university projects are processed. First, we prepare and submit the plan, and after the government's approval, its implementation begins. We've submitted our DPP. The ECNEC may approve it in its current or revised form," he added.
According to the proposal, the project will be implemented over three years, beginning in the 2026-2027 fiscal year, once the final approval is given and necessary government procedures are completed. The initiative is expected to bring significant advancement in RU's education, research, and infrastructure sectors.
Under the proposed plan, three new dormitories for male students and three for female students will be constructed. In addition, Sher-e-Bangla Fazlul Haque Hall will be rebuilt, while several key facilities - including the Medical Centre, Varendra Research Museum, and Juberi House - will undergo renovation and reconstruction.
The plan also includes establishment of a modern Innovation Hub and improvement of campus roads.
Once completed, the new facilities are expected to provide accommodation for more than 7,000 students. The acquisition of advanced research equipment will further boost the university's research capacity and quality.
