UIU holds du'a mahfil in memory of Anti-Discrimination Movement martyrs

Inaugurates ‘Independence Corner’

A solemn du'a mahfil was held on Monday at United International University (UIU) in memory of Shaheed Irfan Bhuiyan, a student of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, and all the martyrs of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The event, which also marked the inauguration of the ‘Independence Corner’ at the UIU Library, took place at Masjid Al-Mustafa, United City, Madani Avenue, Dhaka-1212.

The ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Mr Hasan Mahmood Raja, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of UIU; Mr KM Ahsan Shamim, Member of the Board of Trustees; Prof Dr Md Abul Kashem Mia, Vice Chancellor of UIU; Md. Abdul Moqaddem, Treasurer of UIU; Professor Emeritus Dr M Rezwan Khan, Executive Director of IAR, UIU; and Dr Md Zulfiqur Rahman, Registrar of UIU.

The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Qur'an, followed by prayers for the forgiveness of the souls of all the martyrs of the anti-discrimination student movement, including Irfan Bhuiyan, and for the swift recovery of those injured. As a gesture of support, UIU and United Group presented a cheque of Tk 5.0 million (Tk 50 lakh) to the family of Shaheed Irfan Bhuiyan. In his honour, the UIU Library and Maintenance Lab have been named after him.

Highlighting the significance of the anti-discrimination student movement, the newly inaugurated ‘Independence Corner’ at the UIU Library aims to preserve and showcase the history and data of this historic movement for future generations. Prof. Dr Md Abul Kashem Mia, Vice Chancellor of UIU, officiated the inauguration, expressing that the Independence Corner will play a pivotal role in educating the new generation about the true history of the student movement and the importance of building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

The event was attended by faculty members, officials, students, guardians, and other distinguished guests.
