Bangladesh is blessed with a wide range of travel destinations, featuring breathtaking natural landscapes and archaeological heritages, that collectively represent the vast potential of the country's tourism sector.
Cox's Bazar sea beach, coral islands, the hill tracts, mangrove forests, and picturesque riverine views attract visitors to explore Bangladesh's natural beauty. Besides, the Mughal and the Sultanese architectures also draw the traveller closer to the history and culture of this region, which may be the site of its glorious past.
Though Bangladesh has many places that attract foreign travellers, the country still lags in fully capitalising on its potential.
On the other hand, countries in Europe and the Americas, as well as some Asian countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia, have successfully turned their tourism and hospitality industries into profitable sectors, helping these countries earn substantial foreign currency. In fact, the economic growth of some countries depends heavily on their tourism sectors, which can serve as an example for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is rich in natural beauty and cultural authenticity, offering tourists the chance to explore the country's vast natural wonders and ancient history.
A well-structured, strategically designed campaign, supported by realistic, data-driven insights, will definitely help the country promote its tourism sector worldwide, thereby motivating foreign tourists to visit Bangladesh.
Those initiatives will not only generate foreign currency but also position Bangladesh as a travel-friendly country, thereby strengthening its economic development.
To attract foreign travellers, Bangladesh must adopt a comprehensive set of initiatives. Coordinated efforts from the government and private sectors are needed in this regard.
First of all, Bangladesh's infrastructure should be developed, as it remains outdated in many areas. The road and transportation system, especially in tourist destinations, is still outdated in the country, which often discourages visitors from visiting Bangladesh.
Moreover, a lack of a traffic management system and insufficient rail services also exacerbate the challenges. Addressing these issues and providing meaningful solutions is essential to effectively managing the country's tourism sector.
Moreover, the visa policy for foreign visitors should be simplified so that they do not face unnecessary complexities when travelling to this country.
Airport amenities should also be modernised, and access to trained and reliable travel guides should be ensured across the tourist destinations.
The safety issues should also be addressed nationwide so that visitors can travel to tourist spots without complications.
If the police and civil administration become aware of ensuring the safety tools, including adopting zero tolerance against terrorists, the foreigners will be inspired to visit the scenic places of Bangladesh.
Advanced digital marketing tools should be used to promote the country's tourist attractions, which are among the most effective tools today.
As the global tourism industry increasingly depends on Information Technology (IT), broader access to digital marketing and its outreach tools may be an effective way to advance the country's hospitality business.
Besides, the government should also take special initiatives by inviting foreign tourists with full or partial sponsorship of tour expenses. As a result, many tourists will be able to discover Bangladesh's attractions, thereby boosting the country's tourism sector.
For FY 2025-26, the budget for the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism is proposed at around 2,455 crore BDT, down from 5,695 crore in FY 2024-25. The current budget is insufficient to develop the infrastructure and other facilities needed to attract foreign tourists to Bangladesh.
Saquib Ali, a former diplomat of Bangladesh, shared his suggestions in this regard. He said, "Foreign tourists expect advanced infrastructure and diverse entertainment facilities when travelling to a country. Unfortunately, the infrastructural issues have not been addressed in Bangladesh, which often demotivates tourists from visiting Bangladesh."
He further said, "The entertainment issues, including theatre, music, etc., are not widely available in all of the tourist places. Addressing these issues is essential for building a prosperous tourism industry, which will attract foreign travellers to travel to Bangladesh."
The advanced tourism sector can attract foreign visitors to Bangladesh, thereby strengthening the country's economy. Private initiatives, as well as government efforts, are necessary to advance this sector and enrich Bangladesh's tourism worldwide.
