The country's industries, madrasas and orphanages have preserved over 2.5 million rawhides so far this Eid-ul-Azha season, according to the commerce ministry.
With the supply of 30,000 tonnes of salt to these institutions and other organisations, the rawhides could have been preserved properly.
A total of 0.466 million cow, buffalo, and goat hides have been preserved in Dhaka's Posta area and at the BSCIC Leather Industrial Estate of Savar by the tannery owners.
Meanwhile, 2.05 million hides have been preserved across the six divisions outside Dhaka -- Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barishal, Rangpur, Khulna, and Chattogram -- bringing the total number of preserved hides to 2.52 million, according to the Commerce Ministry.
Officials from the ministry said that in regions outside Dhaka, the preservation work was being carried out under the supervision of district and upazila administrations.
Hides collected from sacrificial animals are being preserved at various madrasas, orphanages, and Lillah boarding houses using salt provided free of cost by the government.
To ensure fair pricing of sacrificial hides this year the government supplied 30,000 tonnes of salt at no cost to madrasas, mosques, and orphanages throughout the country. This initiative has enabled local preservation of hides for up to two or three months.According to the Commerce Ministry, a total of 9.136 million animals were sacrificed across the country this Eid, while 3.3 million remained unsold.
Among the divisions, Chattogram recorded the highest number of hides preserved, totaling 0.775 million including 0.704 million cow and buffalo hides and 74,302 goat hides.
In Rajshahi division, 0.287 million hides were preserved across eight districts. These included 0.111 million cow and buffalo hides and 0.176 goat hides.
Sylhet division preserved 0.209 hides -- 0.187 cow and buffalo hides and 22,000 goat hides. In Barishal division, 0.180 million hides were preserved after collection from madrasas, orphanages, and seasonal traders. This included 166,693 cow and buffalo hides and 13,825 goat hides.
Rangpur division preserved 0.281 million hides, comprising 0.224 million cow and buffalo hides and 56,000 goat hides.
Khulna division preserved 0.327 million hides, including 0.11 million cow and buffalo hides and 0.207 goat hides.
