A cache of weapon, ammunition, uniforms and money were recovered from a hideout of a local insurgent group at Noapatang union of Rowangchhari Upazila in Bandarban district in an army operation recently.
The security forces acquired information that Jana Sanghati Samity or JSS (Santu Larma group) has been active in the hard-to-reach hilly region, according to the Bangladesh Army.
The insurgent group led by Apu Chakma is known to be involved in extortion, arms dealing and other criminal activities in Bandarban and adjoining areas.
A team from Bandarban Army Zone conducted the operation at his hideout at Noapatang at around 5:00 am on April 26.
Following a brief exchange of fire, the army raided the hideout and recovered a 9 mm loaded pistol, a magazine of AK-47 rifle, ammunition bundlers, sharp domestic weapons, commando knives, walkie-talkie, solar charger, electronic items, mobile phones, JSS books, diaries, multiple uniforms, and shoes.
However, the miscreants fled into the forest during the operation.
JSS has been terrorising the region by taking hostages, extorting money and doing other illegal activities, sources at the army said.
The security forces also found documents and records of extorted money at the scene.
