Bangladesh Krishi Bank loses over Tk 1.1 million to theft in Cumilla

Bangladesh Krishi Bank has lost more than Tk 1.1 million to an act of theft recently committed by breaking the vault in a branch in Cumilla.

The theft happened at the fully government-owned bank's Miabazar branch under No. 02 Uzirpur Union Parishad in the district's Chauddogram upazila on Tuesday night.

Police said the bank had not set up any CCTV camera even after warning them of the poor security system.

Sakib Salehin, manager of the branch, said they had repeatedly informed the high-ups of this but no steps were taken.

The authorities have lodged a case with the local police station against unknown people over the theft to the tune of Tk 1,115,225.

Police detained three people -- two guards and a peon -- over the incident. They, however, released the peon later after interrogation, according to media reports.

Confirming this incident, Chauddogram Police Station's OC Abdullah Al Mahfuz said, "We have launched an investigation into the incident."

The branch manager said police and officials from various departments of the administration were visiting the scene and investigating the incident.

BKB Cumilla Zone general manager Md Aminul Bahar said the theft might have taken place due to negligence of duty.

About the installation of the CCTVs in the zonal branches, he said, "I have joined here recently... and I will work to set up CCTVs at all branches, including Miabazar, in the zone as soon as possible."

Earlier in May, the bank similarly lost Tk 0.1 million in its another branch under Dhamti Union Parishad in the district's Debiddar upazila.
