The Bangladesh Railway has launched two commuter trains on Bhanga-Dhaka-Bhanga and Bhanga-Rajbari-Bhanga routes via Padma Bridge.

It also plans commissioning of one more train for the Khulna-Jashore-Benapole route soon.

Railways minister Mohammad Zillul Hakim disclosed this on Saturday while inaugurating the commuter train named 'Bhanga' at Shibchar station in Madaripur.

Commuter train named 'Chandana' will run on the Bhanga-Rajbari-Bhanga route.

Mr Hakim said a new train on the Khulna-Jashore-Benapole route would be running in the next two months after the inauguration by the prime minister.

Citing the government's target to take railways to people's doorsteps, he said rail line on the missing part from Barishal to Payra port would be built in an elevated way for soft soil condition there.

He said a zonal office might be set up at Bhanga as per a plan to divide the BR into four zones from the current two targeting improved rail services.

The BR will operate pier commuter trains on Bhanga-Dhaka-Bhanga route with new coaches having a total of 493 seats.

With the same train set, the commuter train on Rajbari-Bhanga-Rajbari will also be operated.

The train will have stops at Bhanga junction, Shibchar, Padma and Mawa stations with a weekly holiday on Friday.

According to the minister, the commuter trains will be converted into express ones after the addition of new engines.
