CHATTOGRAM: The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) conducted a mobile court and demolished establishments built illegally on footpaths and drains at Muradpur in the port city today (Monday).

Executive Magistrate of CCC Marufa Begum Nely led the mobile court. The court also fined four businessmen Tk 20,000 for illegally occupying the footpaths and drains.

Kalam Chowdhury, public relations officer of CCC, said the executive magistrate conducted the mobile court at Shulokbohor in city's Muradpur area and fined the four businessmen. However, illegal establishments have not yet been demolished at Shershah, Kazirdewri, Agrabad, Patenga and other parts of the port city.

Sources said both sides of the roads and footpaths particularly main roads are being occupied by influential people. They are also setting up shops in areas like Shershah, Kazirdewri, Agrabad and Patenga.

Besides, hawkers have grabbed most of footpaths in different areas of the city. As a result, the roads and footpaths cannot be used. Four feet of maximum roads are being used by the vans of hawkers which make the roads smaller.

According to sources, many illegal establishments have not been pulled down yet from Shershah area as some local people and influential relatives of the outgoing mayor managed corrupt CCC officials. The construction work of a road came to a halt as the magistrate could not recover the land of CCC in front of Nagorik Housing Society.

CCC Mayor Alhaj Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said, "We will evict all illegal occupiers from footpaths and roads and also recover the land of CCC."

He added: "If we can free the footpaths and roadsides from illegal occupiers, people can move smoothly. If we can free drains from illegal occupants, we can address waterlogging easily. So, we will evict all illegal occupiers at any cost as soon as possible."
