A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has triggered heavy rain and gusty winds across coastal and other parts of Bangladesh, severely disrupting daily life in the capital and elsewhere in the country.
On Thursday, Dhaka recorded 83 mm of rainfall-the highest in the city this year-causing widespread waterlogging and traffic congestion.
The situation worsened by noon, with key areas such as Jurain, Demra, Badda, Mirpur, Green Road, and New Market submerged in knee-deep water by evening, leading to severe traffic disruptions.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Maizdi in Noakhali recorded the highest rainfall at 168 mm, followed by Faridpur (159 mm), Teknaf (147 mm), and Khepupara (146 mm) as of 8:00 PM.
Traffic in busy terminals like Gabtoli and Mohakhali nearly came to a standstill, further aggravated by the surge of homebound travelers ahead of Eid.
A special BMD bulletin reported that the deep depression began crossing the Bangladesh coast near Khepupara and India's Sagar Island around 3:00 PM on Thursday.
The Met Office forecasted rain over the next three days due to the ongoing low. In its 8:00 PM bulletin on Thursday, the BMD predicted light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with lightning and temporary gusty winds across most regions, including Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in some areas.
