The government has made educationist and political analyst Mahbub Ullah a national professor.

The Ministry of Education announced his appointment to the post in a notification on Monday.

Reacting to the appointment, Prof Mahbub told bdnews24.com: “I have been pursuing knowledge all my life. I hope this responsibility will give me greater opportunities to continue that pursuit.”

He has been appointed national professor for a five-year term. Under the appointment, he will be affiliated with a research organisation or educational institution and conduct research in a field of his choice.

Prof Mahbub is currently the convenor of the interim committee of the Bangladesh Economic Association.

He previously served as deputy vice-chancellor of the National University and as chairman of Sonali Bank between 2003 and 2006.

He also taught in the Department of Economics and Development Studies at the University of Dhaka.

Earlier, he was a faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of Chittagong, where he also served as dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
