The government has no role in any decision regarding President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s possible resignation, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Thursday, amid speculation over the issue.
Speaking to reporters, Salahuddin said the Constitution allows the President to resign on health grounds or for any other reason if he wishes, but the government has no information about any such move.
“Constitutionally, the President has the option to resign due to health reasons or for any other reason if he wants. However, we do not know anything about any resignation,” he said.
Asked whether the government was taking any steps regarding the matter, the Home Minister replied, “The government has no role here. The media has reported that rumours of the President’s resignation are circulating.”
When asked about media reports alleging that the President spoke by phone with ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina during his medical visit to London, Salahuddin replied, “I don't know.”
