India urges Bangladesh to extradite Zakir Naik during his planned visit in Dhaka

India has expressed hope that Bangladesh will hand over Islamic preacher Dr. Zakir Naik if he visits Dhaka in November to participate in a charity event.

At a press briefing on October 30, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "Zakir Naik is a fugitive. He is wanted in India. So we hope that wherever he goes, the country concerned will take appropriate action against him and take our security concerns into account."

Naik, 60, is expected to visit Dhaka on November 28 and 29 to attend an event scheduled to take place in the capital's Agargaon area, according to a local daily newspaper.

Known for his Islamic lectures, Zakir Naik left India in 2016 after being accused of promoting hate speech and money laundering under the Narendra Modi-led government.

His television channel, Peace TV, was also shut down in the same year.

Naik later obtained permanent residency in Malaysia, where he currently lives.

He has consistently claimed he will not return to India "until justice is assured."

Bangladesh banned Zakir Naik following the Holey Artisan attack in 2016, after reports that militants who carried out the attack were influenced by his speeches.

However, the ban has since been relaxed after the fall of the Awami League government in August last year, allowing his potential visit, which has now prompted India's renewed call for his extradition.
