Officials and employees at the National Board of Revenue have begun protests calling for the removal of senior officials at the government agency following the overthrowing of the Sheikh Hasina government and protests at other agencies.

They demanded the dismissal of ‘opportunistic officials’, including current Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Munim and First Secretary (Tax Administration) Md Shahiduzzaman.

The protesters put forward a 9-point charter of demand that included not allowing deputations for anyone in the administrative cadre.

Workers demonstrated in front of the NBR chairman’s office on Wednesday. They included officials at the board member level, VAT and income tax departments.

First Secretary of Customs Md Neyamul Islam said: “[The NBR chairman] has been using divide and rule all this time.”

Neyamul said he had established a ‘reign of terror’ by bringing in close allies from the administration and making them his first and second secretary.

He also said the previous government had taken advantage of the chairman to file a ‘false case’ against Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is set to take charge of the interim government.

Other officials and employees expressed similar opinions and burnt a poster of the chairman.
