The pro-Jamaat-e-Islami lawyers have announced a programme to boycott all courts of the country, including the High Court Division and Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, from January 1 to 7 in 2024, in solidarity with the pro-BNP lawyers.
The Jamaat-leaning lawyers, under the banner of ‘Bangladesh Lawyers’ Council’ made the announcement at a press conference held at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) building on Sunday.
Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda, General Secretary of the Lawyers’ Council, read a written statement in the press conference.
“Almost all the political parties, professional organisations and civil society members of the country have agreed on the establishment of a Caretaker government to make the 12th national elections free, fair, impartial and participatory. The democratic world and development partners of Bangladesh have also been emphasising fair and participatory elections.
However, the government is ignoring it and trying to organise another farce in the name of elections like 2014 and 2018. There will be no more democracy and democratic values in the country, if this farcical election is completed”, he read from the statement.
Advocate Jasim Uddin Sarker, President of the Lawyers’ Council, Advocate Golam Rahman Bhuiyan, Advocate Abdur Razzak, among others, also attended the press conference.
Earlier on December 27, leaders of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (BJAF), a platform of pro-BNP lawyers, announced a programme of boycotting all courts across the country, including the Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Supreme Court, from January 1 to 7 in 2024.
They made the announcement at a press conference held at the Supreme Court Bar Association building. Barrister Kayser Kamal, central Secretary General of the Ainjibi Forum, read a written statement at the conference.
Meanwhile, leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association on Sunday said that the programme of boycotting courts is contrary to democracy, the rule of law, and direct interference to the trial process.
This kind of programme curbs the rights of common people to get justice, said the leaders.
SCBA leaders said this in a press conference held at the SCBA auditorium on Sunday.
Advocate Abdun Nur Dulal, Secretary of the SCBA, read a written statement in the press conference. SCBA President Advocate Md Momtazuddin Fakir, Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Advocate S M Munir, among others, attended the conference.
