Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury has emphasised the immediate need to capitalise and distribute funds for loss and damage as decided at the COP28, held in UAE last year.

Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Monday, he stressed the importance of swiftly disbursing funds to the most affected communities in the world, according to a release.

Chowdhury said all nations should raise their pledges for climate finance to address the growing needs of vulnerable countries adequately.

He also said there is an urgent necessity to define climate finance and align funding with scientific assessments.

The minister emphasised the importance of accountability in implementing Global Stocktake outcomes and closing any potential loopholes.

He underscored the significance of actions aligned with the 1.5°C target, praising the concrete commitments made by nations to transition away from fossil fuels under ‘the UAE Consensus’.

Chowdhury called for enhanced efforts in crucial areas such as mitigation and just transition pathways to fulfil the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

He emphasised the need to translate ambitious outcomes into tangible actions that benefit the most climate-vulnerable communities.

The session, moderated by CNN presenter Becky Anderson, featured prominent figures including COP28 president Dr Sultan Al Jaber, IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva, and UNFCCC executive secretary Simon Stiell, among others.
