Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, MP, on Sunday said a skilled workforce and safe working environment are the cornerstones of Bangladesh’s sustainable development and prosperity.
“Our future generation is highly talented and full of potential. With proper guidance, they can take the country much further,” he said while addressing the prize-giving ceremony of an essay competition organised for college and university students to mark May Day and the National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2026 at the Labour Building in Dhaka.
Expressing optimism about the country’s youth, the minister said the achievements of the winning students reflected the immense promise of the younger generation.
He said the present government is committed to promoting workers’ welfare, adding that no nation can achieve sustainable progress without a skilled workforce. Citing China as an example, he said the country had advanced significantly by effectively utilising its skilled human resources.
Highlighting the importance of occupational safety, Mr Chowdhury said developed countries give top priority to ensuring safe workplaces, but many industrial establishments in Bangladesh have yet to attach the desired importance to the issue.
He instructed labour inspectors to go beyond routine inspections by engaging directly with workers, understanding their concerns and taking appropriate measures to address them.
Describing the country’s workforce as a valuable national asset, the minister said its effective utilisation is essential for overall economic development.
He also urged young people to spend less time on social media and devote more attention to learning, knowledge-building and creative pursuits.
Labour and Employment Secretary Md Abdur Rahman Torofdar attended the event as the special guest, while Additional Secretary Md Abdur Rahim Khan chaired the programme.
The minister later distributed certificates and crests among the winners of the competition.
