A child from Teknaf who was seriously injured by gunfire originating from Myanmar has died under hospital care.

Huzaifa Sultana Afnan suffered a critical head injury in the incident in Whykong Union on Jan 11. She died around 9:50 am on Saturday while receiving treatment at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka.

Her uncle, Shawkat Ali, said she had been on life support for several days, reports UNB.

Huzaifa, the daughter of Jashi Uddin -- a resident of Lombabil village in Whykong Union -- was shot and injured as she went out to buy breakfast with her grandfather.

Later, her uncle Shawkat took her from Teknaf to Chattogram for treatment. That night, doctors at Chittagong Medical College Hospital operated on the 9-year-old, but the bullet lodged in the child’s brain could not be removed because of the high risk involved. She was later transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Shawkat said residents of the border area had been alarmed overnight on Jan 10 by the sound of gunfire from across the border, although the situation appeared calmer the following morning.

He said the child had gone out with her grandfather to buy snacks from a nearby shop when she was struck by a stray bullet while they were returning home.
