A cleaning operation at a water treatment tank in a ceramics factory in Mymensingh's Bhaluka has left two workers dead.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning at the Excellent Ceramics factory near Seedstore, according to Bhaluka Industrial Police Inspector Imarat Gazi.
The deceased have been identified as Shafiqul Islam, 30, from Khulna district, and Md Rumel, 25, from Netrokona district. Both were contract day labourers.
Police said the two were working at the factory on a contract basis and were not regular employees.
Around 10am, they entered the water treatment tank to clean it.
Shafiqul entered the tank first, and when he stopped responding, Rumel went in after him to check on him.
Both eventually lost consciousness inside the tank.
Other workers pulled them out and took them to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex.
They were later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Sub-Inspector Sujauddin of the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital police outpost said the two workers fell ill after entering tank, and were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Inspector Gazi said, "The situation at the factory is currently calm. The victims' relatives have been informed. Once they arrive, further legal action will be taken based on their complaint."
