Violence against women and children increases alarmingly in 2019 compared to 2018.
902 children became victims of rape in 2019, seemingly three times higher than that of 2018.
Of the total 902 rape victims, 48 per cent children were aged between 13 and 18, and 39 per cent children were seven to 12 years old.
Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), a non- government organisation, disclosed the figures at a press conference in the capital’s Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday.
On the other hand, in another press conference in the city on the same day, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) disclosed another report of violence against women and female children in 2019.
Based on information of some 14 national dailies in the country, it said that some 4,622 women and female children became victims of violence in 2019.
The BMP, terming the rise of valence against women and children as alarming, said that among the total as many as 1,703 women and female children were victims of rape.
MJF got the one-year report after it went through news reports of some eight national dailies of last year starting from January 2019.
MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam addressed the event and expressed her worry over the alarming rise of violence against children.
The report mentioned some 986 children got killed in 2019 in accidents and incidents of violence.
Of the number, some 553 were killed in road accidents and 252 in drowning. Furthermore, some 361 were killed in some other violence including murder, torture and rape.
The report showed that number of negative incidents regarding children also went up in 2019 compared to 2018.
In 2019, some 65 children committed suicide and nine others were injured in attempts to commit suicide, according to the report that added some 83 children became victims of kidnapping, among them 12 were killed and 71 were injured.
